Hello Readers, 

this is my first blog! I am fascinated by travelogues and wish to blog about it too. However, it may make sense to first discuss about travel. 

📍ORIGIN OF THE TERM "TRAVEL":

The French word 'travail' is considered to be the root word for the term travel. According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, the first known use of travel was set in the early 14th century. 

📍HISTORICAL FACTS:

Travelling for leisure can be traced back to wealthy Greeks and Europeans travelling to their summer homes and villas.

Earlier travel was mostly for trade and migration. Such travels were full of danger, the destinations were inaccessible and the journey was slow. In contrast, travelling today has evolved manifold and has become faster, safer, easier as well as accessible.

Organised travel started when conquering armies needed to move troops to neighbouring lands. This created the foundation of future travel. Over time, the necessary travel was expanded to include voluntary tourism.

📍SOME NOTABLE TRAVELLERS OF ALL TIME:

1. Marco Polo was a Venetian merchant, explorer, and writer who travelled through Asia along the Silk Road, in the 13th century. His travels are recorded in "The Travels of Marco Polo".

2. Vasco da Gama was a Portuguese explorer and the first European to reach India by sea.   

3. Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer and navigator who completed four voyages a
cross the Atlantic Ocean, expanding the area under the European exploration.

Below are a few brave women who explored the foreign lands to a great extent:

4. Isabella Lucy Bird  was a nineteenth-century British writer, photographer and naturalist. She was the woman to be elected Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.

5. Annie Londonderry was a Latvian immigrant to the United States who in 1894–95 became the first woman to bicycle around the world.

While the above are historical figures, Sarah is a true inspiration for all girls of the current time.

6. Sarah Marquis is a Swiss adventurer and explorer. From 2010 to 2013, she walked 20,000 kilometres alone from Siberia to the Gobi Desert, into China, Laos, Thailand, and then across Australia.

📍PURPOSE:

There can be a thousand possible reasons for travelling. Some of the popular ones are:

1. Holidays/ vacations, leisure

2. Exploration, research, discovery 

3. Meeting people, visiting family members, family functions, business meetings

4. Immigration, emigration

5. Pilgrimage, spiritual trips 

6. Health care, treatments,

    on and on....
